Honda reveals details on Civic diesel: dream on, Philippines

August 15,2011

With the all-new Civic still months away, all we have to tide us over is the Mugen special edition and photos of the North American Civic. We have seen the new American Civic and it doesn’t look like the current one as much as it does in the photos. Now Honda Europe has released some details on its version—mainly on its diesel engine.

With a 2.2-liter displacement, the i-DTEC engine delivers 148 hp and, more importantly, 350 Nm of torque. Honda freed up 10 bhp over the old engine by redirecting the oil and changing some engine materials and components to reduce friction. The engine also features idle start/stop technology.

Honda also optimized the car’s aerodynamics. According to Katsushi Watanabe, Development Leader for the engine: “To achieve a good CO2 figure, you need to optimise every aspect of the car. Reducing the emissions was our key target and we’re proud to say that we have achieved this without compromising the high performance character of the engine. We want our customers to have fun when they drive this car.”

It seems futile to hope that Honda will break with the norm and introduce a diesel sedan in the Philippines. So we will have to be content with the European reveal at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Meanwhile, here are some videos on the European Civic:
