Subaru XV: the roomiest-in-class compact SUV?–more photos

September 14,2011

Subaru has officially launched its XV compact SUV, a car that will slot below the Forester in its lineup. Subaru is promising best-in-class spaciousness with the XV, with an “extremely roomy passenger compartment, a cargo area that is both spacious and convenient, and excellent riding comfort.” So does the XV stand for “Extra Volume”?

In addition, it has enlarged door openings and higher seats for easier ingress and egress. Just the thing for when your back can no longer bend into your Porsche 911.

The exterior follows Subaru’s new styling language, a decidedly mixed bag but more in tune with its utilitarian roots. It features the new hexagon grille, hawkeye headlights, and cut-away cladding style. At 1570mm, XV is nearly as tall as the Forester, but is decidedly shorter in length (4450mm). 220mm of ground clearance is just the thing to traverse flooded streets of Metro Manila without floating away.

Powering XV is of course a boxer engine, in 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter displacements. The engine features auto start/stop and is mated to a CVT. The diesel will be offered in European markets. The first XVs start arriving in showrooms in 2012; the Philippines should follow suit soon after.
