Manila Electric Company (Meralco), the Philippines’ biggest electric power distributor, is set to make Philippine automotive history on July 30, 2013 when it inaugurates the first electric vehicle (EV) charging station within its own compound in Pasig City.
The very first customer will reportedly be Meralco Chairman of the Board, Manuel V. Pangilinan, as he will use it to charge his personal Tesla S sedan, recently imported into the country. The white sedan proudly bears the license plate “Zero Emissions.”
Meralco will likewise use the electric charging station in cooperation with Mitsubishi Motors, which will make available several units of its iMIEV electric car to the power utility. Meralco aims to “highlight the future of land transportation using green fuel,” and encourage use of electricity for commercial use in cars. Of course, increased electricity usage will translate to even higher revenues for the company.
