MITSUBISHI Motors Philippines Corp. (MMPC), mired in controversy over allegations of sudden unintended acceleration in dozens of its Montero Sport units, made a stand on the issue in no uncertain terms during the press conference held yesterday at the Edsa Shangri-La.
“Sudden unintended acceleration (SUA) is not possible on the Montero Sport from a technical viewpoint. There are safety check systems on the Montero Sport electronics which will eventually allow the Montero Sport to go to safe mode in case sensors fail,” declared Froilan G. Dytianquin, MMPC first vice president.
The press conference was followed by a vehicle demonstration using the Montero Sport. Several media members were asked to ride in one of three SUVs.
This writer rode in the unit that its owner claimed to have undergone SUA. During the demonstration, the vehicle was throttled to the redline at 4,500 rpm. Then the brake system was engaged with the brake pedal. The demo showed that it worked as designed: Braking stopped the vehicle.
Dytianquin also stressed that MMPC is acknowledging its support and cooperation to the Department of Trade and Industry’s initiative to investigate the SUA issue.
“We are also open to any third party technical diagnosis just to show our confidence in our vehicles,” said Dytianquin. He stressed that only a third party evaluation would put a closure to the issue,” he said.
Dytianquin added that “this is not the first time this unfounded issue has been raised. Nonetheless, we take each incident seriously.
“Time and again, we came to the same conclusion: There is no design, mechanical nor electronic defect in our product,” said Dytianquin.
“We have already presented our technical findings in various forums, and are open to all other independent and credible forums to show our commitment to producing only safe and quality vehicles,” added Dytianquin.
“In light of the recent media attention, we embrace the chance to explain the facts again in the presence of the DTI investigating panel,” said Dytianquin.
“We will make public all our findings to reassure our customers that the Montero Sport is completely safe and reliable, and has no SUA issues,” he said
“For the peace of mind of all Montero Sport customers, you may visit any of our service centers nationwide for a free check up of your vehicle,” he added.
“During the checkup, our qualified personnel will reorient you on the best and safest way of operating the vehicle,” said Dytianquin.
